John Paul II Observation Tower in Wieżyca
John Paul II Observation Tower in Wieżyca
One of the biggest attractions of Kashubia is undoubtedly the observation tower on Wieżyca. It is located less than two kilometers from Szymbark. The peak of Wieżyca is the highest natural elevation of the Polish lakelands and the entire Polish Lowland.
Legends say that it was once a place of worship for ancient Slavs. Currently, at its summit at 329 meters above sea level, there is a tower that is popular among both tourists and local residents. The current observation tower named after John Paul II was built in 1997 and renovated in 2019, and it is already the fifth tower in this location. To reach the top of the 35-meter structure, one must climb 182 steps.
View from the observation tower
The observation tower is a real attraction for people visiting Kashubia. It offers a picturesque view, including the Szymbark Hills and the lakes of the "Kółka Raduńskiego". The summit itself is covered by a 150-year-old beech forest. A comfortable walking trail leads to the summit, which should not pose difficulties for people of different ages. It is an excellent place to admire the undulating Kashubian landscape. Access to the observation tower in winter depends on weather conditions. During this time the metal structure is heavily iced, and the tower is then inaccessible to visitors. It is worth then using the popular ski slopes and lifts. At the foot of Wieżyca, there is a large (paid during the season) parking lot. Reaching the observation tower from the nearest parking lot takes about 15-20 minutes. The path runs along the edge of the nature reserve, which protects the beech forest.
